From the Grand Canyon to Meteor Crater

Going from the Grand Canyon to Meteor Crater

In hindsight, we probably should have done this in reverse. No crater, no matter how big, is going to be very impressive after the Grand Canyon. It's kind of a let down. But, no matter. We visited it anyway and got the sticker and postcards to prove it.

Interesting fun fact, this is near Winslow, Arizona- the Winslow, Arizona named in the Eagles' song "Take it Easy."

Well, I'm a standing on a corner
in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me

This is not a painting. It is a window in a brick wall looking out toward the desolation that surrounds the crater.

It's roughly this view in a brick frame.

Doug, Eli and Peyton in front of a test Apollo Command Module. There is an astronaut wall of fame and several space/NASA displays here. Inside the museum is pretty informative. There is also a gift shop and a Subway. Who knew. The gift shop has a very eclectic selection of items. There are fossils, rocks, NASA products, alien souvenirs, and general tourist crap...stuff- tourist stuff.

Actually climbing to the edge of the crater for a photo is quite the hike. The wind was blowing SOOOO hard. At times it pushed you backwards like those videos of people trying to cross the street during hurricane force winds.

And now.............
Part of Meteor Crater.

-and more of the crater.

Meteor Crater is the largest, best preserved meteor crater in the world- probably because no one can find it.
